Mason Bates
The music of Mason Bates fuses innovative orchestral writing, the rhythms of electronica and techno, and imaginative narrative forms brought to life by cutting edge sound design. A composer of symphonic music who often includes live electronica in his orchestral music, he has become known as an artist who moves fluidly between those two worlds - performing on electronic drumpad and laptop, for example, with the National Symphony Orchesta in his Liquid Interface at Carnegie Hall, or creating an evening of concert music and electronica with members of The Berlin Philharmonic in the former East Side. Awarded both a Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome and an American Academy in Berlin Prize, he is a member of the acclaimed New York-based Young Concert Artists. Jack Perla
Mr. Perla studied with Oscar winner John Corigliano at the Manhattan School of Music. After Manhattan School, he studied at Yale with Jacob Druckman, Martin Bresnick and Lukas Foss, and wrote a new series of varied and virtuosic chamber music. He eventually headed west to San Francisco, where he worked extensively with the Oakland Symphony. They commissioned me several times, most recently with the James Irvine Foundation for a piece entitled Trane of Thought - an orchestral fantasia on John Coltrane melodies. He is currently working on several new commissions including a work for Minnesota Opera as well as a one act opera for Tapestry New Opera - the leading Canadian opera development organization, based in Toronto. Daniel Wood and Quadre
Hailed as an ensemble that "zaps the myth that classical stuff's stuffy" (Birmingham News), QUADRE-The Voice of Four Horns is a group of four solo French horn artists who provide concert presentations, interactive educational outreach, lectures, and workshops each season. The ensemble’s mission is to make new music accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for audiences. Not surprisingly, QUADRE’s latest recording, Citrus, is described as having moments of “inspiration, sorrow, silliness, love, virtuosic display, but above all: just plain fun” (International Horn Call). The Magik*Magik Orchestra
Since its debut, Magik*Magik has consistently sold out shows at crossover venues all over town including Great American Music Hall, Swedish American Hall, and Hotel Utah to "audiences massively dominated by listeners in their 20's -- almost unheard of in the classical world" (Richard Scheinin – San Jose Mercury News). Magik*Magik has been singled out by every major local publication and numerous music blogs as one of the area’s most relevant orchestras to the masses of popular music fans still unfamiliar with classical music. Critic Joshua Kosman of the SF Chronicle raves, “It would be hard to envision a more skillful approach to the goal of mixing up rock and contemporary classical audiences.” Magik*Magik finished off its first season with a sold out performance Davies Symphony Hall performing with Sting under the baton of maestro Michael Morgan.
